Karen Callahan’s 25+ years of delivering double-digit growth, siphoning large chunks of market share from competitors, and skyrocketing overall profitability for her clients makes her a smart investment for any marketing department or agency seeking to maximize ROI.

Rainmaker, marketing strategist, and copywriter Karen Callahan has brought billions in profit to American Express during her tenure there as Regional Vice President. Karen not only acquired some of the world’s most profitable clients for American Express — and oversaw the highly-profitable marketing campaigns launched for these clients, but her masterful approach to client retention exploded AmEx’s bottom line as well.

Case in point: Karen’s acquisition and development of the U.S. Federal Government Agency account for American Express’ portfolio has continued to deliver over $1.2 billion annually and continues to grow every year even some 13 years later.

Over the years the company’s top sales professionals unsuccessfully pursued this long time holdout. However, it was Karen’s ability to find the right decision makers, convince them to share their critical business needs, and then her ability to craft the right entry strategy that was key to successfully landing this highly-profitable and difficult acquisition.

Her shrewd design of the company’s public sector entry strategy continues to deliver billions in spillover profits from federal, state, and local agencies to this day.

Education

Karen began her academic pursuits at the University of Tennessee where she received a degree in Merchandising in 1982. Karen then moved to the Washington, D.C. area to pursue a career with American Express.

As Karen achieved success, her career advanced and she assumed roles of increased responsibility. She continued to broaden her education receiving an MBA with honors from Marymount University in1993, and an Executive Management Degree from Babson University in 2001, while continuing to deliver record-breaking results at American Express.

Professional Experience

At one point Karen was one of the company’s “Top-Guns,” tasked with landing the most difficult accounts in the United States. While in this role, she landed every branch of the U.S. Military along with the long sought Federal Agency account, the U.S. Postal Service, and American Express’ first state government contracts, in addition to many retail, restaurant, and entertainment holdouts.

Karen advanced to the role of Regional Vice President for the Eastern United States Region — the company’s largest  and most profitable region in the world. While in this position, she and her team of 150+ sales and marketing professionals managed relationships with over 150,000 merchants, delivering double-digit increases every year to the over $10 billion booked annually by these accounts.

She and her team worked with clients, streamlining transaction processing and developing share-shifting cooperative direct marketing campaigns. In addition to creating share-shift campaigns for merchants, they collaborated with economic development organizations to create in-bound marketing campaigns driving travel and tourism spending into theire markets.

Some of her clients include Marriott, AOL, T.J. Maxx, The New York Yankees, Smith & Wollensky, NYC & Company, MTA, Coach, Gucci, Tiffany’s, LVMH, The Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and hundreds of thousands more.

Recognition

Karen and her teams have enjoyed numerous recognitions over the years for their outstanding performance. A few of these include:

  1. Partner of the Year, NYC and Company, 2004
  2. Revitalization of Downtown Manhattan, 2002
  3. Allied Partner of the Year, New Jersey Restaurant Association, 2001
  4. Assoc. Member of the Year, New York State Restaurant Association, 2001
  5. Non-constituent Member of the Year, Fairfield County Visitors Bureau, 2001
  6. Ally Award, Virginia International Waterfront Arts Festival, 1997

In addition, Karen has served on the board of directors for numerous organizations, including: NYC & Company, Washington D.C. Mayoral Transition Team, Washington D.C. Community Development Team, The Foundation For Educational Innovation, The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, and The Washington D.C. Blue Box Council.

Today Karen offers her unique skill set of billion-dollar copywriting, “big picture” strategic planning, and client acquisition and retention talents to aggressive, forward-thinking companies, agencies, and organizations.

Karen has worked with a broad range of clients to find
out who head on over to the client’s page.
